  1. A Lie Doesn’t Care Who Tells It

  “East?”

The side of her head and face was all Kilian was allotted to see as she stood with her eyes cast down. The room was still quiet minus the soft babbling of the baby girl in front of them, and Jerian and Sasha’s bickering behind them. Their conversation was made up of whispers and a multitude of teeth sucking and cursing.

He could hear them very well, but his focus wasn’t on that at the moment. Right then, he needed East. He needed her to say something that would make sense of her ex-boyfriend showing up on her parent’s doorstep with a daughter who looked exactly like her.

  “I know you hear me.”

East nodded but still didn’t say anything to him. Instead, she looked at Jesse. The deep scowl in her forehead matched the one in Killian’s as they both stared at that nigga. Though Killian wasn’t too moved by Jesse or the way he’d just pulled that hoe move, he wanted answers.

“What do you want from me? Why would you come here and do that?”

Jesse’s face was unreadable. Killian couldn’t tell if he wanted to smile or frown. It was stupid, he was stupid, and the whole stunt he’d just pulled was stupid. Had they been anywhere else other than her parent’s living room, Killian would have probably slapped him just for acting like a female.

“I don’t want anything from you. I just thought since you were in the mood to be domestic, you should include your daughter.”

“No, you’re just being malicious because I don’t want you anymore.”

Jesse shrugged. “You don’t have to want me, but you should at least want her.”

“Don’t try to throw this baby up at me! You knew what it was when I had her.” East yelled.

Deidra moved to where East was standing and wrapped her arm around her shoulders. Her empathetic eyes quickly glanced Killian’s way.

“Jesse, it’s time for you to go.” Junior’s hand on his shoulder directed Jesse toward the door. “Had I known you were coming over here to start some shit, I would have left your ass outside.”

“Mr. Junior, I’m not trying to start anything. I didn’t even know she was here.”

“I’m starting to think you did see my mom’s text. You just came anyway.” Jerian spoke up.

Killian looked down at her as she walked over and stood next to him. A silent alliance had been formed between the two of them, and he liked it.

“You’ve been bothering my sister with this mess since she had that baby.”

Damn. Killian felt like he’d been kicked in the chest. So, the baby was, in fact, East’s. In his inside voice, he’d been hoping that it was all was some sort of joke or weird situation that would result in the baby not being hers. He’d hoped wrong.

“Bothering her?” Jesse asked indignantly. “How could I bother her with her own child?”

“You’re a jackass,” Jerian told him before grabbing Killian’s arm. “Come on.” She tried to lead him away from the living room, but he pulled away.

“Excuse me.” Killian walked up the stairs instead.

He took them two at a time until he reached the bedroom where their things had been placed. After quickly scanning over their bags, he picked out his. He grabbed them both in his hands along with his jacket from the bed and headed back down the stairs. All eyes were on him when he rounded the corner. Versus looking at either of them, Killian fixed his eyes on the door and headed for it.

“Killian, don’t leave!” East rushed to him.

“Just stay, baby.” That was Deidra.

Killian ignored them both and continued to the door. He nodded once at Mr. Junior, who had rendered a head nod of his own.

“Hey, I’m sorry about all of this, man.” Jesse touched Killian’s arm as he passed.

Not even bothering to stop himself, Killian dropped his jacket to the ground and punched Jesse in the mouth. His body slammed against the pictures on the wall, causing them to fall to the floor. Without a second thought, Killian exited the house and trekked to his car.

The trunk was open, and he was stuffing his things inside when East and Jerian both ran outside behind him. Jerian touched his shoulder while East forced her way between him and the trunk of his car.

“Don’t go. At least let her explain.” Her sister tried to plead her case.

East grabbed his face and made him look at her. “Killian, you can’t just run away from me without knowing the whole story. You can’t do that.” Her head shook from side to side as she held his gaze.

“Watch out.” Killian tried to get around her, but Jerian stepped into this path and blocked it.

With East and her sister both preventing him from walking around either of them to get into his car, Killian stood with his hand covering his mouth and the other hanging down by his side. The truth of the matter was, he really did want to know what was going on, just like he really didn’t want to leave her. East having a baby was some serious shit, but she didn’t strike him as the type of woman who would be a deadbeat mom.

“Will you at least let me tell you what’s going on?”

“Were you ever going to tell me you had a baby?” he asked her without removing his hand from his mouth.

East nodded immediately. “The whole thing is just so complicated. I didn’t want to run you away or make you think that I’m a bad person.”

Killian stepped forward, moving his hand as he spoke. “You have a whole fucking baby that you don’t take care of. How could you possibly be a good person after that?”

“It’s more to being a mom than that, Killian.” Jerian refused to give up on her sister.

His eyes went from her back to East before looking toward the front porch. Jesse, the little boy, and the baby were all filing out of the house. He watched them all load into the car and pull away before looking back at East. His anger was rising again, and he needed to get himself together before doing or saying anything that he couldn’t come back from.

“I’ll be back,” he told East, finally pushing past her and Jerian.

Killian tried to hop into his front seat, but East holding onto his arm and wedging her body between him and the door prevented that.

“Just move, East. I said I’ll be back.”

“No.” She shook her head and pushed his chest. “You’re not leaving because you might not come back.”

“I just told you I’d be back. Unlike you, I’m not a liar.”

East frowned. “I’m not a liar either! I didn’t lie about having her. I just never mentioned it.”

  “Same thing.”

“It’s not.” Jerian chimed in again without permission.

Kilian’s eyes cut to her. He had liked her at first, but that mouth was wearing thin. She was like East. Neither of them knew how to control their tongues. The only difference between her and East was that he loved East. Things that prevented him from cursing East out and calling her every name under the sun didn’t apply to Jerian. He hadn’t known her for a whole day yet
. She most definitely could feel the effects of mean Killian.

“Just come back in the house and let me explain,” East begged.

Killian’s head shook. His fitted cap came off next and was tossed into his car. He ran an open palm over the waves in his hair and looked at her.

“East, just step back and let me get my thoughts together.”

Her shoulders dropped as water pooled in her eyes. Killian looked away. He refused to be affected by her tears.

  “I’ll be back.”

“You promise?” she grabbed his hand, and he let her hold it.

  “Yeah, now move.”

East nodded slowly before stepping out of his way and walking to where Jerian was standing. They both stood and watched him get into his car. Even standing and watching until he pulled away. Never having been to Durham in his life, Killian had no idea where he was about to go, but he didn’t care. He’d just drive until he could get his thoughts and feelings together.

Right then, they were all over the place. Killian loved East and wanted to be with her, but not if she was going to keep secrets and hide things. Her having a child should have been one of the first things she’d told him about herself. Furthermore, what kind of woman had a baby and didn’t take care of it? His mind was blown as he thought about the irony of the situation.

In the back of his mind, he felt that she might be pregnant by him right then, and all the while, he’d assumed their baby would be their first child. Killian scoffed. This was some serious bullshit. He needed some answers. Had he stayed, she probably could have given him some, but he’d have to try that after he cooled down.

Killian had felt like a clown standing there trying to protect her from a nigga who knew more about her than he did. He hated feeling like a sucker, and that was exactly how he felt. Annoyed and confused, Killian grabbed his phone and called Onyx. He was laughing when he answered.

“Where you at?” Killian got straight to the point.

“Home, what’s up? Y’all made it yet?”

Killian exhaled. “Yeah, we made it, but check this out. We’re chilling at the house, and her ex shows up with a damn baby that looks just like her.”

“What? Looks like who? East?” the confusion in Onyx’s voice was a mirror of what Killian’s feelings had been upon finding out.

“Yes! This girl has a fucking daughter I knew nothing about. Jaylen ain’t never tell you about East having a kid?”

“Hell nah. Jaylen?” Onyx spoke in the background.

Killian listened to him ask Jaylen about the baby. When the line went quiet, Killian knew then. She had known. How in the world had everybody known and nobody thought to tell him? East and her family were some of the dumbest people he’d ever met.

“Kill, you ain’t about to believe this.”

Killian stopped at the red light. “What? She knew too?”

“Yep, but you already know I’m about to get in her ass about this.”

A frustrated sigh left Killian as he wiped his hand over his face. “Nah, it ain’t her fault. That’s her family. She did the right thing by not saying nothing. I wouldn’t tell Jaylen no shit about you that you didn’t tell her yourself.”

“You right, but what you gon’ do? Where she at now?”

“I left because I needed to cool off.”

“So, what that lame ass nigga say? What kind of man outs his baby mama on some spiteful shit?”

“Not a real one.” Killian pulled into the parking lot of Walmart. “I knocked that nigga on his ass, though.”

Onyx’s laughter was so boisterous that Killian had to pull his phone away from his ear. He was was still so loud that Killian had to laugh at that nigga too.

“Why did I know you was gon’ like that?”

“Because you know how I am about my respect, nigga. That’s real shit. You should have knocked his ass out coming up in there showing out on your wife like that.” Onyx chuckled again. “If for no other reason, hit his ass about your respect.”

“That’s what I was on. Nigga came up in there like I was nobody. Talking about East needed to step outside with him. Bruh, I liked to swung on her ass too when she walked over there like she was really about to go outside somewhere with her ex nigga.” Killian shook his head. “Nigga, my woman ain’t going nowhere I don’t tell her ass she can go.”

Onyx was back laughing again. “You already know I feel where you coming from. I wish Jaylen would try me like that.” There was movement on Onyx’s end before his voice got far away. “Jaylen, you ain’t got no babies nowhere, do you?”

This nigga here. Killian smirked while checking the text that had just come through from East.

All My Life: Where are you? I’m sorry. I really can explain.

All my Life: Please come back.

Killian read the messages over and over again for no real reason other than he didn’t know what he wanted to say back.

  “So, are you going back?”

Killian took the phone off speaker and answered it again. “Nigga, yeah, I’m going back. That’s my baby. This is some dumb stuff, but I’m tired of going back and forth with East. We’re finally in a good spot, so I’ma just get my head together for a minute then go to her parents’ house and fuck on her real quick. I’ll be straight after that.”

“You think sex fixes everything, don’t you?”

  Killian chuckled. “It does.”

“No, the fuck it does not.” Onyx laughed, and Killian joined.

“Well, in my world, it does. I’m a simple man, and when I’m fucking, my mind relaxes. You know what, let me carry my ass back over here right now.” Killian cranked up and drove back out of the parking lot. “I can’t think straight. I need some pussy.”

  “Boy, you hell.”

“No, nigga, what I am is serious. I’m done arguing with her. I’m about to get me some, listen to her explanations, and we gon’ move on happily ever after. I’m not about to keep up all this damn back and forth shit with her. I think she gets off on that.”

  “Word?”

“She has to. She’s always arguing with me or trying to pull away, but as soon as I get to pulling my damn dick out, she’s right there to catch it.”

The men laughed hysterically, making jokes to lighten the situation until Killian was pulling back into the driveway at East’s parents’ house. Even after turning the car off, he sat there for a minute. He was desperate for sex, but he needed to gather his thoughts and feelings, first. He did, in fact, love East, but what could she possibly tell him that would justify leaving her child? That was bogus as fuck. Furthermore, what kind of man would he be to stay and love a woman who would do that? What if she did that with his babies?

“Lord, Jesus.” Killian grabbed his keys and hat then got out of the car.

He didn’t even bother with his bags just yet. He would save those for after East explained this whole baby situation to him. Although he would hate to leave her, he wasn’t sure how he would act if she told him some fucked up stuff. Killian loved kids and would love his own even more. If East was indeed carrying his baby right then, like he felt that she was, he needed to be sure that she would be able to care for it properly.

“I knew you were coming back.”

Killian looked up and saw Jerian and Sasha on the steps. Sasha was the one who felt the need to address him as if he had looked over her blowing up East’s spot.

“You ain’t know shit,” he told her in a nasty tone.

“I know you ain’t talking to me like that. Nigga, you don’t even know me.”

“And don’t want to. Any bitch that will out her own sister is not worth knowing.” Killian stepped between her and Jerian. “Now excuse me.”

“Damnnnn, Sash, he told you.” Jerian’s laughter could be heard as he opened the door to let himself in the house. “And called you a bitch.” She was still laughing as she instigated.

“Shut the fuck up, Jerian. Ugly ass fucker don’t even know me to be speaking on what the fuck I d
o. I’ll cuss his black ass out.”

Killian ignored the ugly comment but turned on his heels when he heard her call him black. He didn’t allow light skinned people to do that shit. For some reason, it made him feel a certain way.

“Cuss me out.” His eyes remained on her as she frowned at him. “Like I thought, insecure ass fucking girl. You an ole hating ass hoe. You’ve got to be sad as fuck to envy your own sister.”

“Call me another name, and I’ma show you what type of woman I am.”

“Girl, fuck you.” Killian looked her up and down before walking back into the house and closing the door in her face.

She nor Jerian came in behind him, so he went in search of East by himself. It was mostly quiet, but he could hear her parents talking in the kitchen. He didn’t want to eavesdrop, but he couldn’t help himself. They were so close that even if he tried not to hear them, he would.

“Jesse has always been on that fuckery. I’m not surprised one bit that he pulled that shit today,” Junior said. His disdain was evident in his words.

“You’re right, but I thought more of him. I thought he’d at least grown up some.” Pots and pans clinked in the distance. “I just hope he hasn’t run East’s little friend off. He seems like a sweet boy.”

“Ahh, he’s alright. He’ll be back. I can tell he’s got a good head on his shoulders. He’s a thinker. He probably just needs to think about all of this shit.” Junior sighed. “I can’t believe East didn’t tell the boy about that damn baby.”

“I can. You know how hard all of that was for her.”

Killian was headed up the stairs when he noticed East coming down. Her face looked sad, and she’d changed her clothes. No longer in her jeans from earlier but a pair of short flannel shorts instead. Her hair was also out of the style from earlier and hanging loosely around her neck and shoulders. When her eyes found his, she looked hopeful.

Paused in mid-step, East looked down at him. Before she could she could say anything to him that would blow his cover, Killian headed toward her. He didn’t bother to stop where she was. Instead, he grabbed her hand and pulled her up the stairs behind him.
